What Crash? Home Prices Soar on Posh Fisher Island
FISHER ISLAND (CBS4) ¯ What, me worry? That must be the attitude among homeowners on ritzy Fisher Island, the enclave of millionaires in the middle of Government Cut, south of Miami Beach, who apparently are doing well even while the rest of South Florida's housing market flounders.
While South Florida is littered with for sale, foreclosed, and reduced signs in front of homes that aren't selling, Forbes Magazine reports Fisher Island, a place so exclusive that it has its own zip code, is the best zip code in the country for home prices. Rising, that is.
Forbes reports the average sale price of homes on Fisher Island is up $525,000 this year. The median sale price for a home on the Island, accessible only by boat, ferry or helicopter, was $3.85 million, according to Forbes.
What's to explain rising property values on Fisher Island in an otherwise tanking real estate market?
Forbes quotes an analyst as saying, "The areas that have been insulated from the mortgage meltdown tend to have high income residents."
Fisher Island certainly qualifies.
Among some of the high income residents who have bought on Fisher Island are Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Ricky Martin, Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, and Governor Charlie Crist's fiancé, millionairess Carole Rome.
Other zip codes on Forbes' list of places where home prices are high and going higher are a neighborhood in upper Westside Manhattan, a suburb of San Francisco, and Alpine, New Jersey.
