The unusual privacy and luxury you enjoy while living in any of the Fisher Island homes is a result of the many pioneering efforts by Carl G. Fisher, otherwise known as the father and creator of Fisher Island. To get an idea of how the entrepreneur came to create the now highly regarded island neighborhood he once owned, here's a (very) short history.
It was largely the Florida land boom of the 1920s that would lead to the advent of what we now call Fisher Island real estate. Areas like nearby Miami Beach saw a huge surge of people swapping land back and forth in the hopes of getting rich off of selling real estate and it was during this period that Carl Fisher himself purchased the 200 acres that now comprise Fisher Island.
Carl Fisher's ownership of Fisher Island proved to be somewhat short lived as he gave the island to none other than William Kissam Vanderbilt in exchange for a massive luxury yacht six years after he bought the land. Vanderbilt is obviously a familiar name know anything about the island or if you live in one of the surrounding Fisher Island homes near the Vanderbilt mansion. So while Carl Fisher is the man who created Fisher Island, it was Vanderbilt who essentially turned the island into the posh and wealthy neighborhood that it is today.
